When and where do I start baby proofing?

When you start is totally up to you but I would recommend beginning to think about it during pregnancy as once your little one arrives you won't have much spare time!

But it's most important to ensure baby proofing your home is complete by the time your baby begins crawling.

Where to start can be quite a daunting question, especially for first time parents.

For the first few weeks of your childs life they will be in their crib or with you, so other than creating a warm comfortable environment for them there is not a lot of baby proofing needed yet.

However before long your baby will become very mobile! They will wriggle, squirm, roll and seemingly try to put themselves in much peril as possible!

You will be amazed at how quick and far a very small baby can wriggle themselves too when your back is turned for the slightest moment!

So this really is a good starting point to try and visualise the potential dangers.

I've provided a step by step guide below.

A step-by-step guide to baby proofing

1. When to start baby-proofing

  • Begin thinking about baby-proofing during pregnancy to get a head start.

  • Aim to complete baby-proofing by the time your baby begins crawling.

2. Early days: Minimal adjustments

  • Focus on creating a warm and comfortable environment for the first few weeks.

  • Since newborns primarily stay in their crib or with you, there's minimal need for extensive baby-proofing during this time.

3. Preparing for mobility

  • Babies quickly become mobile—rolling, squirming, and wriggling more than you might expect.

  • Start visualising potential dangers by observing your home from a baby’s perspective (e.g., on hands and knees).

4. Key areas to baby-proof

  • Sleeping Area:

    • Use a crib that meets safety standards with a firm mattress and no loose bedding.

  • Living Room:

    • Secure heavy furniture to the wall.

    • Cover sharp edges of tables and other furniture.

    • Keep small objects out of reach.

  • Kitchen:

    • Lock cabinets with cleaning supplies or dangerous items.

    • Install stove knob covers and oven locks.

  • Bathroom:

    • Use toilet locks.

    • Keep toiletries and cleaning products on high shelves or in locked cabinets.

    • Always supervise bath time.

  • Stairs and Windows:

    • Install stair safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.

    • Use window guards or locks to prevent falls.

  • Electrical Safety:

    • Cover unused electrical outlets with safety plugs.

    • Keep cords out of reach and secure them to prevent pulling.

5. General tips

  • Avoid using baby proofing products as a substitute for supervision.

  • Regularly check for hazards as your baby grows and their abilities change.

  • Prioritize non-toxic materials for baby-proofing tools and household items.

6. Final checks

  • Do a "crawl-through" of your home to spot dangers from a baby’s perspective.

  • Regularly review your baby-proofing setup to ensure continued safety.
